3 new luxury brands introduced – interesting ‘brand’ tidbits!

23 08 2008

Some of you must have seen the ads of the ‘Strings of Freedom’ concert of Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and Clive Carroll to be held on Thursday, Aug 28. Khimji’s Watches Division, which is the presenter, has announced the introduction of 3 new brands in Oman; one in the category of writing instruments (CARAN d’ACHE OF SWITZERLAND), the second in the category of Watches ( de GRISOGONO) and the third in the category of mobiles , oops !!!! ( catch VERTU, the worlds most expensive mobile phones calling themselves that – they prefer to be known as jewellery or accessories – sounds snobbish, but then that’s what all premium luxury brands are all about).

Pen connoisseurs will be very familiar with CARAN d’ACHE; it is a Swiss manufacturer of high-quality writing instruments, fine art products, and accessories. It was founded in Geneva in 1924 when Arnold Schweitzer purchased the Ecridor Pencil Factory who named his new company after Caran d’Ache, the nickname of a French satiric political cartoonist from Russia (karandash meaning pencil in Russian). In 1929 Carl Schmid invented the Fixpencil, one of the first Clutch Pencils which has been trademarked by Caran d’Ache.

The De Grisogono brand was started in 1993 by Fawaz Gruosi. Orginally, the company designed and produced jewellery and everyday items such as sunglasses which were then sold in a boutique located in Geneva. Gruosi introduced the use of black diamonds into many of his designs, which at the time was very unusual. With the success that followed he was quickly able to open boutiques in London, Gstaad, Rome, Paris, St. Moritz, Kuwait, Moscow and Hong Kong – all within the first 5 years. It wasn’t until the year 2000 that Fawaz developed his first watch collection for De Grisogono, the Instrumento No Uno, the watch set the standard for the now highly successful brand.

Vertu is a British-based manufacturer and retailer of luxury mobile phones. The company is an independently run, wholly-owned subsidiary of the Finnish mobile phone manufacturer Nokia. The concept of the company is to make mobile phones in the same vein as luxury watch manufacturers like Rolex, IWC etc.  One of the most expensive models it has ever made is the Signature Cobra, at US$310,000 (~€217,000);

The mobiles themselves are made from very expensive materials such as gold, sapphire (for the mobile screen), rubies (for the bearings) and fine leather. Plus, each mobile is hand-made in its factories in United Kingdom. Vertu’s Principal Designer is Frank Nuovo.

To keep the value of the brand, Vertu mobiles are only available in its own branded stores, leading department stores such as Harrods and Selfridges in London, and authorised retailers. Vertu’s flagship store opened in 2002 in Paris and then soon after in Singapore.

One of the services when one acquires a Vertu mobile, is a year free concierge service called “Vertu Concierge”. It is accessed through a special button, the “Concierge key” at the side of every phone. The service comprises a team of assistants to help the owner around the clock almost anywhere in the world.

 Exciting times for Khimji’s Watches!!

Post-Holiday Touch-ups

21 08 2008

The holiday’s blues come with skincare blues too…

With the holidays coming to an end we all need to reset our buttons to re-energize. Hectic holidays come with late nights, overeating, over-drinking, on the whole too much of overdoing. This entails in lack of sleep, for some it’s over exposure to the sun and for others it’s the cold weather.  Between running around in the harsh weather conditions, late nights, cooking, cleaning, and shopping, one can easily begin to slack on our daily beauty regimen leaving the skin to pay the price.

We’re often left feeling “over”: overstuffed, overstressed, overtired, overwhelmed.

Drink plenty of water. The standard 8 glasses of water per day will renew your skin’s healthy moisture levels.

Steam Bath Facial: Steaming the face, not only opens up your pores to cleanse and purify, it can improve circulation, bringing some colour back to those cheeks.  The best way is soak a towel in steaming hot water, let it cool and then wrap your face with it. Leave it on for a few minutes. Then rinse your skin with cool water. The benefits include a clean, refreshed face along with one feeling of relaxation.

Dark under-eye circles:  The first step to reduce the dark circles is to get enough of sleep each and every night. The quick trick is of course a good concealer but for a more long lasting treatment you should head to your dermatologist (Kaya, where else?)

The effect of a good night sleep should never be underestimated. If the stress of the holidays made you reach for a cigarette, or two, or ten, now’s the time to quit. Smoking makes your skin look older. This will help bring vital oxygen and nutrients to your skin, giving it a healthy glow.”

The last not the least, we all have experienced post-party/holiday pimples, this is due to the fact that stress causes the hormones to ignite but the post-holiday break-outs are common and treatable.  The solution is getting into the habit of washing your face daily. Three steps are highly recommended before jumping in to bed, use a cleanser, toner and a moisturizer.   Visit a skin specialist if you have sensitive skin or if the pimples do not subside with above simple steps.

Dont let Skin Sores become Holiday Woes

9 08 2008

As we get set to take off for the holidays, a lot of preparation and precaution is needed for our skin.

Dr. Sahana Dermatologist, Kaya Skin Clinic suggests ways to avoid developing skin issues during the holiday season.

Sun Protection

The best is to avoid the sun is not to step out from 10 am to 4 pm but we all know that is impossible when we are globe-trotting. The solution is always to layer oneself with a good sunscreen and select a sun block which has ingredients that act as antioxidants. These will help in renewing the skin and prevent cell damage.

Moisturizing Face Mist

When traveling in a compressed environment like an aircraft, the air is very dry similar to the summer air. Under both conditions, we suffer from dehydration. The answer is to hydrate our skin with a face mist. A mist should be alcohol free as this dries the skin further. An ideal face mist is one that contains floral waters, vegetable glycerin, and pure essential oils. This is must-have in anyone’s bag as it will keep the skin refreshed, smooth and keep the excessive oil formation at bay.

A Cleaning Mantra

Exposure to pollution can create a coating of grime and grease on the surface of the skin.  The best way to prevent any kind of breakouts, blocked pores and the formation of blackheads is to follow a daily cleansing regime

The first step involves a cleanser: For most skin types, a non-foaming light lotion-based cleanser is the ideal choice.  A foam-based cleanser has chemical agents which dry the skin. For an oily-based skin, a light gel-based cleanser is suitable. The toner is the second step following cleansing: The toner fights the effect of dust on our skin and helps to restore balance, control oil formation and keep the pores free from excess dirt and bacteria.

Daily Skin Moisturizing

Another way to re-hydrate the skin is to moisturize at least twice a day.  A light, non-greasy moisturizer will help keep the skin nourished. Lotions that contain natural oils such as sweet almond, apricot kernel and jojoba moisturize the skin without clogging pores.  One should keep away from those that are too weighty and have ingredients such as petrolatum, mineral oil, artificial colours and fragrances. They can irritate the skin and block the pores, especially when used in warmer conditions.

Dr. Sahana, recommends, “That if we follow three easy steps as part of our daily skin regime i.e. use good cleanser, moisturize, and apply sunscreen. This will definitely help achieve a healthy skin and keep dark spots & pigmentation at bay.”

Home Spa-Treatments

When we travel, we do not have the time to visit our favorite spa or facial clinic. We can follow simple home-grown remedies for a quick facial scrub or mask.

Here are some examples:

The tropical fruit the ’Pineapple’: It can be by all skin types (normal-oily), an excellent skin cleanser and exfoliant.

Another fruit is Papaya:  Again for all skin types. This fruit gentlely removes all impurities and dead skin cells.  This works beautifully on a skin that is exposed to chlorinated water after swimming.

Coconut Milk: We all heard of the all-round qualities of the coconut and not surprising than to hear that it can also be used as skin cleanser to nourish the skin and as a conditioner for dry hair.

The last but not the least, what if we get sun burnt, a nightmare we are all familiar with and the natures answer to us is the Aloe Vera Plant. When applied, it acts as soother and also great for cuts, burns and insect bites.

Traveling and Exhaustion

Traveling has its thrills but also comes with tiredness. To alleviate our weariness, we must not leave our homes without carrying pure therapeutic essential oils such as tea tree, lavender and peppermint. The tea tree oils are considered to remedial quality for mosquito bites, pimples, rashes and athlete’s foot. Lavender oil helps us to relax, is soothing and heals all sorts of cuts and burns. At times with traveling comes, fatigue, nausea and jet lag. All this can be sorted by applying peppermint oil.

Eye Pillows

One of the most important accessories in ones travel bag is an eye pillow.  Tired eyes and headaches can be avoided if we use an eye pillow that contains herbs and pure essential oils, such as lavender and chamomile. It soothes and rejuvenates those tired eyes and is the epitome of pampering.

We hope these suggestions will help you plan your holiday better and convince you to fill your beauty travel kit with these very important essentials that best suits your individual needs and skin type.

Holidays are well-earned, so let’s not ruin them by not taking care of our skins and developing sores that become woes.
