uberty is associated with skin changes, for both the genders. Persons with perfect skin could break out into acne, after-effects of which may continue for a long period. Also, the nature of skin may change – oiliness being pronounced or skin becoming patchy.
Since youth is a period which encompasses hormonal changes, academic stresses, skin is also affected accordingly. Periods of problematic skin may be interspersed with period of relatively normal skin.
Basic skin care is simple. Gentle cleansers, used 2-3 times a day, removes dirt and grime. Overzealous cleansing leads to dryness and must be avoided. Harsh scrubs are not advisable for everyday use, especially in persons who are prone for acne. They also exacerbate dryness, and their use must be limited.
Toners preferentially suit oily skin types. Persons with combination skin must use toners only on the t-zone. Sunscreens are mandatory, whatever the skin type is. SPF 15 and above is advisable generally.
Higher SPF or a water-resistant sunscreens are beneficial during outdoor activities. Sunscreens ideally have to be applied 15 to 20 minutes before going out and reapplied every 4 to 5 hours. Use of physical sunscreens like hats, protective clothing, umbrellas, dark shades is encouraged.
Moisturisers too are necessary and form a part of the basic skin care. Persons with oilier skin can apply light, oil-free creams. Dry skin needs a greasier preparation. Acne, or pimples as it known, is a common teenage problem. It starts during puberty and may continue till mid twenties. They may be regular outbreaks or they may be associated with periods of stress, hormonal changes, application of acne-inducing cosmetics, usage of scrubs and ‘picking’ on them.
When acne become moderate or severe, a dermatologist consultation becomes necessary. Excessive hair growth on the face in a female, may start during puberty, because of hormonal disturbances. This would need treatment with lasers.
Regarding hair care, shampoos and conditioners form the main stay. Regular shampooing takes care of the oiliness and dandruff.
Hair loss is a common complaint, specially during exams! This can be mostly managed with vitamin supplements. If unresponsive, doctors consultation helps. Certain lifestyle modifications have their benefit towards a healthy skin.
Adequate intake of water, fresh fruits and salads, light exercises, meditation go a long way in helping skin to remain healthy.
